Veterinary Rehab and Fitness Therapies: Aquatic Treadmill
Did you know Kryder & Harr Veterinary Clinic has the region’s only aquatic treadmill for pets? Tandy works with our rehab and weight loss patients in the treadmill to provide easy, low-impact, healthy activity for pets that need it most. We offer our rehab services post-operatively as part of orthopedic surgeries, for patients recovering from injury, or to those suffering from certain neurologic conditions.
Need a way to jump-start your pet’s recovery or weight loss? Consider joining Fit Club! Fit Club is for our pets that are not suffering major medical limitations but need to get some controlled exercise. Have a little one that doesn’t want to walk in the winter? Then sign up for Fit Club and let us walk your dog!
There are a number of benefits to walking in the aquatic treadmill:
- The warm water stimulates blood flow.
- Water provides buoyancy and minimizes impact.
- Walking rather than swimming helps preserve the normal range of motion.
- Walking in water rather than air helps promote muscle mass.
And it’s not just for dogs! Violet Ann is a kitten that was hit by a car and had extensive orthopedic injuries to all but one limb. After having her front right leg amputated and a couple weeks of rest, she learned to walk and regain balance in the treadmill.

Pet Laser Therapy Services
Kryder & Harr Veterinary Clinic is happy to provide the Michiana area with laser therapy, a non-invasive and effective way to treat and maintain many illnesses in both dogs and cats. It helps by stimulating healthy cells and reduce inflammation. Each treatment will be 1-10 minutes given by a trained staff member. Illnesses and conditions treated include but are not limited to, wounds, ear infections, intervertebral disk disease, chronic pain and inflammation, gingivitis and arthritis. It is painless and the treatment is easy. You sit down with your pet, each wearing protective eye gear as a trained Kryder & Harr Veterinary Clinic staff member applies the “laser wand” to the affected site. Each treatment is tailored to the individual patient. Painless and easy!
“I have been excited about laser therapy – it is a non-invasive, drug free modality, which reduces pain, inflammation and increases speed of healing.”
–Tandy Clifton, Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner.
I absolutely believe the underwater treadmill therapy was responsible for his turnaround.
We are most grateful for Kryder’s underwater treadmill program aka the Fit Club. After many treatments for lameness and pain, it was determined that our dog, Lucky had multiple orthopedic conditions. Lucky already had undergone one TPLO surgery in 2011 and it was likely he would require his other knee to be done in the future.
Shortly after this assessment in 2012, we began working with Tandy who manages the underwater treadmill program. Our goal was to improve Lucky’s quality of life through strengthening. We hoped the conditioning would save him the pain of additional surgeries.
This began a carefully tracked and measured process. Tandy monitored his leg muscle size to determine what muscles were being worked and what muscles needed additional work via the underwater treadmill. She patiently explained how the level of water could target different muscles.
In the beginning Lucky needed a little enticement to get accustomed to the water, but Tandy can get very creative when the situation requires it. She was wonderful with him. She was patient and kind with both Lucky and us.
I can happily say that Lucky never required additional surgeries for his orthopedic problems. I absolutely believe the underwater treadmill therapy was responsible for his turnaround.
Lucky loved going to therapy twice a week for the rest of his life. We lost our sweet boy in 2018. Throughout those six years, I feel Lucky received the best possible care. I would not hesitate if our current dog would need the same care - Kryders + Harr (Tandy) would be my first choice. I highly recommend their treadmill program and the expertise of their staff.
